The science program “Découverte” on Radio Canada’’s french network will air a documentary this Sunday, February 19th, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Tony De Peltrie. In addition to receiving many awards, the computer-generated short created by four university students in Montreal led to more CG developements in the snowy city, including the creation of Softimage, in 1986

A 1999 AWN article by former Softimage tech writer Emru has a few more pictures on the subject.

I don”t know exactly what will be in the Découverte documentary, but a couple of my colleagues here at Softimage have been interviewed for it a few months ago.

Good grief, I”d forgotten all about Tony. He’’s the one that started off the peg software thing, isn”t he. I remember seeing him at a SIGGRAPH. He was an impressive thing to look at back then.

Too bad I missed it. I”ll have to catch the rerun.

    Greets to everyone!

They spent more time talking about “Adventures in 3D Animation” than about “Tony de Peltrie”. For those who remember “The Boxer” trailer released in 1996, it was AWSOME back then. But since the final result was released in 2005, it was just an average 3D movie, rendered in IMAX stereoscopy, with half the time spent on explaining what is 3D animation.
It’’s a shame, really. That movie would have been a huge hit if the director wouldn”t have spent all that time making changes on background crowd characters.
